The ANTI-WRINKLE guide for men

If your hip wears out, the wonders of modern medicine say you can get a new one. Same with your knee. But your skin can't be replaced, and any attempt to correct your skincare mistakes with surgery could lead to…well, unintended results.

The key to aging gracefully is taking care of your skin as early and as regularly as possible, both from the inside out and from the outside out.

Diet, hydration and exercise, as well as your social life, what you do with your face every morning when you wake up and what you do every night when you go to bed, all play a role in how your skin resists over time.

Fortunately, when you know what to do, everything is easier, and while establishing good skin care habits takes effort, it is much less expensive and painful than going under the knife.

What you need to know?

Skin care requires a multifaceted approach.

Putting on the best serums is useless if you don't lead a healthy lifestyle to keep your skin healthy.

In the same way, if you make sacrifices to eat well and treat your body with respect, but don't protect your skin from the sun, your results will be mediocre.

We've divided this guide into two sections: skin care from the inside out and skin care from the outside in.

Take care of your skin from the inside

The skin is your largest organ and like any other organ, your skin depends on you treating your whole body well.

Water:

Drink at least 3.7 liters (~15 ½ cups) daily. Water makes up more than half of your body, so it stands to reason that water is crucial to all aspects of our health.

When it comes to your skin, this couldn't be more true. Moisturizing from within - and from without, as you'll see later - can make a big difference in the health and appearance of your skin.

Although there are no official recommendations on how much water we should drink, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine suggest 3.7 liters for adult men would be ideal.

Diet:

Eat a healthy diet, including plenty of fruits and vegetables. You've heard it before, probably since you were a kid. But eating healthy really helps keep your whole body healthy.

Fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants. Vitamin C, carotenoids such as beta-carotene, polyphenols, and flavonoids play important roles in maintaining skin health, healing wounds, preventing oxidative stress, and reducing other signs of aging, all of which are found in naturally in fruits and vegetables.

Essential fatty acids, like those found in fish and seeds, can similarly combat the visible signs of aging by helping skin retain moisture.

All these substances, along with others such as prebiotics and the probiotics, can be obtained through the diet.

A diet rich in real foods (as preached by the realfooding) is a diet that will protect your skin. But just as healthy foods can help your skin, unhealthy foods can damage it.

Sleep:

Get seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night. When you don't get enough sleep, your mood is likely to worsen and your ability to concentrate is affected.

But lack of sleep also affects your appearance, and we're not just talking about dark circles. Researchers have found that chronic lack of sleep is directly associated with signs of aging.

In a 2015 study, researchers found poor sleepers had drier skin and lower satisfaction with their appearance.

In addition, the skin of those who slept well recovered more quickly from sun exposure.

Create a nightly ritual to facilitate sleep—turn off your electronic devices well before you get into bed—and make getting a full night's sleep a priority.

Do exercise:

Keep a routine. Sweat can be gross when it's pouring out, but it definitely helps keep your skin healthy. Even beyond giving you that healthy glow and rosy cheeks, there's evidence to show that regular exercise can help stave off the visible signs of aging.

Another 2015 study found that a sedentary lifestyle can lead to premature aging, and there's plenty of research showing how fitness can keep your whole body looking younger.

It is believed that many of the anti-aging benefits of exercise can be attributed to the production of proteins that stimulate cellular activity, which tends to deteriorate with age.

In other words, when you're panting during a workout, your waist isn't the only thing that reaps the benefits.

Excessive smoking and drinking:

Do not do it. Both smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can lead to premature aging of the skin, as well as a long list of other detrimental health effects. Decreased blood flow, damaged collagen and elastin, dehydration, and poorer sleep quality—essentially, these behaviors will make you feel: old.

Take care of your skin from the outside

With a healthy body, you can maintain perfect, healthy skin for many years, but at some point, no matter how well you eat, wrinkles will appear. This is where topical skin care comes into play. What you put on your skin can help protect it from the elements and even slow down the natural aging process.

Cleaning:

Make cleaning your skin a daily habit. Your face is always exposed, making it open to all the elements and pollutants in the air you breathe.

Dirty skin has much less to do with appearance than it does with long-term effects: pimples, wrinkles, photoaging, and even microscopic damage from pollutants.

Wash your skin twice a day, at least once with a gentle cleanser.

Protection:

Wear sunscreen every day. UV damage is one of the main causes of premature aging. The sun's effects on your skin include: dehydration, wrinkles, loss of elasticity, sagging, and discoloration.

This damage becomes visible over time, and some studies have found that skin damage from UV exposure is already present in people as young as 15 years of age.

if your cream daily moisturizer has a sunscreen, you don't have to think about it. Choose one that has a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Reapply throughout the day, especially if you're sweating or swimming.

Anti-wrinkle cream: If you choose anti-aging products, give them a chance to work by applying them for at least a month to test their effects on your skin.

There are countless anti-aging products on the market. If you walk into the cosmetics section of any drugstore, you'll see them, and possibly be overwhelmed and walk away.

Look for anti-aging products that focus on hydration, like a anti-wrinkle moisturizer

In summary

Keeping skin healthy and looking great takes work, but establishing good habits can make your efforts automatic.

Plus, many of the habits that lead to better skin also lead to better overall health. So, if done right, they can help you enjoy healthy, youthful skin and body.
